      Jefferson County is on the east side of Ohio next to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It was one of the earlier counties in Ohio created in 1797 formed from the first county in Ohio, namely Washington, which itself was created in 1788 as the original county of the Northest Territory. In 1804 Jefferson County included what are now Harrison and Carroll Counties. Ohio became a state in 1803.

      In 1846 the county of Ashland was formed mainly from the eastern part of Richland County (which included Green township) with townships from Wayne, Huron, and Lorian counties.

      “Elizabeth wife of George Black died May 3, 1817 ag’d 63yrs 23dys”
      She would have been born 1754, possibly this George’s mother in which case his father would also be named George. The stone may have been relocated to this cemetery since no other stone is dated before 1835. According to Mrs. Robert N. Ungerer’s Our Illustrious Shaffer, Shafer Family, the graveyard wasn’t created until 1840.
