    Notes
    • From Our illustrious Shaffer, Shafer family, compiled and written by Mrs. Robert N. Ungerer (née Thelma Shafer), Wooster, Ohio, 1980, p. 4:
Charles enlisted in the Revolutionary war at Germantown, for the “duration of ye war”, discharged at Germantown April 3 1779. Served as a Mattross (gunner’s helper, assisted in loading, firing and sponging the guns) in the 4th Artillery Regiment under Captian Duffey in the continental line. Charles was listed ona May, 1778 muster roll. Congress authorized the paymaster general to settle any claims between the U.S. Army and the officers as to “Depreciation Pay”. From this, Charles received 98 pounds, 6 shillingss and 3 d. Bounty land was given to the soldiers, but Charles did not apply, he was quite deserving though. Charles never applied for a pension, this perhaps he never needed.
