    Notes
    • Notes from Stan Howland:
Henry never married. He was raised on the family farm in Alamo, MI. In the mid to late 1800's he spent some time in Kansas. He was back in Alamo around 1900. He helped with his parent's sawmill in Kalkaska and in Gun swamp. About the same time, Henry and three of his brothers (Frank, Will, & Edward) bought the Lutz feed barn in Allegan. Henry moved to Allegan and eventually bought out one of the brothers. In 1906 Henry, and his brothers that were partners in the Lutz feed barn, bought 280 acres of timber on Nebish Island and shipped their sawmill there. Will stayed in Allegan and ran the feed barn. Henry, Frank, and Edward cut logs in the winter and sawed in the summer. They did very well in 1906 but lost heavily in 1907 and 1908 due to the famine. They had to quit and return to the feed barn. They traded the feed barn in 1917 for 424 acres in Martin Township. On this acreage they tried a variety of crops over the years. They raised melons, then strawberries, then fed sheep, and finally raised hereford cattle and milk cows. They sold the farm in 1944 and ran the sawmill on the farm for the new owner.
