    Notes
    • Notes from Stan Howland's records:
There is some confusion as to George Ellsworth Howland's legal name. Some sources show that he also had a middle name of Lewellan, but there is no solid evidence to show this to be true. His marriage certificate and the federal census reports do not show the name Lewellan. One marriage listing found in Michigan reports this name but it is not sourced, and therefore not reliable. The name Lewellan may have been presumed at one time based on its similarity to "Lell", which is what he went by. Lell was probably not called George as this was his father's name. It appears that Lell was probably short for Ellsworth.

Lell was born in February of 1863 in Van Buren County, Michigan. In 1870, George Ellsworth Howland was 7 years old and living with his parents and his 3 siblings in Almena, Van Buren County, Michigan. Almena is a small farming community located about 13 miles west of Kalamazoo, Michigan. When he was between 13 and 15 years of age he moved to Boulder, Colorado with his sister, Elizabeth and her family. Lell may have been working in the mines as it appears that Elizabeth's husband, Daniel Webber, was connected with the mining industry at that time. Although it is not clear when Lell moved back to Michigan, it appears that it was sometime between 1881 and 1883.

Lell was married to Laura Anne Oliver in 1884. In 1900 (age 38), he was living in the township of Alamo in Kalamazoo County with Laura and their 6 children; Charles H., Roy, Harry, Martha, William, and Frank. His occupation was listed as Teamster. They were living next to Laura's parents, William and Sophronia Oliver. They left later that same year for Salubria, Idaho. Salubria is located approximately 2 miles south of the town of Cambridge. The town of Cambridge was just being developed at this time as a result of the railroad's decision to place its tracks on the west side of the Weiser River, instead of the east side where Salubria was located. Within a short period of time Salubria ceased to exist. One always wonders what precipitates such a distant move in the days when travel was so much more difficult. In Lells case it appears that they were following his sister Elizabeth. Elizabeth and her family had moved to Salubria Valley from Colorado and were living about halfway up Advent Gulch. Lell and Laura settled on a ranch located approximately 12 miles northwest of Cambridge at the upper end of Advent Gulch.

Lell Howland died in August of 1904 from injuries sustained from an accident that occurred on Horse Flat, just a few miles northwest of town. He was returning home one evening after an evening in the local tavern, when his team of horses ran away. He was killed when he was thrown from the wagon. Lell was buried near the old original homestead. The grave can no longer be located. Very little is known about Lell due to his death at such an early age. There simply was very little information handed down about him.
