Bill Chamberlin of St. Johnsbury passed away suddenly at his home Monday evening, Feb. 13, 2012 at the age of 91.
Bill was born at home in Barnet, Vt., on Jan. 13, 1921 to Clarence E. and Hazel (Welch) Chamberlin. He went to the Joe's Brook one-room schoolhouse.
On Sept. 19, 1940 Bill enlisted in the regular Army, A battery, 32nd field artillery, 18th infantry B.N. of the first division, the Big Red One. Bill fought in many campaigns including landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 during the invasion of Normandy. He received the bronze medal by saving the truck and gunnery on the beach, and was the driver of the first truck up over the hill. Amongst his many campaigns, he was proud to have fought in the Battle of the Bulge under the direction of Gen. George Patton. He was discharged from the Army on June 25, 1945.
Bill came home on June 25, 1945 to Geraldine Bolton who had been waiting for him for four years; they were married July 11, 1945 and were together for 55 years until her passing Aug. 8, 2000. Bill worked at St. Johnsbury Trucking for 38 years. He was very proud to be a member of the Teamsters Union Local #597 for which he was a trustee for four years, vice president for four years, and president for nearly two years.
He is survived by two children: Valerie Leclerc and her husband Charles of St. Johnsbury, Billy Chamberlin and wife Paula of Lyndonville; five grandchildren: Valerie's son Jeremy Bean and Teri Achilles of Barnet, Charlie's son Todd Leclerc and wife Michelle of Danville and their daughter Emily, Billy and Paula's two sons Billy Chamberlin of Tampa Fla., Tim Chamberlin and wife Lauren of Lyndonville, Jeff Corrow and wife Angel of Lyndonville; his sister Florence Fleming of St. Johnsbury; his brother Jim Chamberlin and wife Nola of Sebring, Fla.; nieces and nephews; Gerry's remaining brothers and sisters; special friend Gertrude Broome of St. Johnsbury. Bill was predeceased by a sister Ruth as a young girl.
Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Thursday, Feb. 16 from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Friday morning at 11 a.m. Mr. John Sleeper will officiate.
Burial with military honors will be held at the Danville Green Cemetery on Friday, May 11 at 9 a.m.
