BRABON, Mr. Cleland S. "Pete" Portage, MI
Died Monday, February 15, 1999 in Brownsville, TX. Mr. Brabon was born January 29, 1920 in Kent City, MI, the son of Clarence and Clara (Cook) Brabon, and had lived in Portage since 1945. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Portage First United Methodist Church, and a life member of the D.A.V. Buck Crosby Chapter #6.
Pete was a self-employed carpenter, and worked as a residential builder for 45 years. He served as a volunteer fireman for he City of Portage for 21 years, and in the late 50's and early 60's had served as Assistant Civil Defense Director for the City of Portage. Pete had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf. On December 6, 1941, he was united in marriage to Frances Brondyke, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter Carol Grabemeyer of Haslett, MI, and her children, Michael and Andrea Grabemeyer; a son, Bruce Brabon and very special person, Cindy of Mattawan, MI , and her children, Krissy, Kerri and Chad; 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Fred (Loraine) Brabon of Gobles, MI, Burnath (Edith) Brabon of Kalamazoo, Lucille Earhart of Mesa, AZ, Marvel (Kenneth) Brockman of Portage, and Carl Brabon of Chicago, IL; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bill and Fannie Andrews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis Brabon; and by 2 sisters, June Cook and Irene Rodrique. Services will be held at 12:30 o'clock Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Avenue with Pastor Greg Wood officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Portage Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portage First United Methodist Church.

Pete and Frances had spent winters in Brownsville, TX since Pete's retirement. Their permanent residence was in a home built by Pete at 8047 Kingston Drive, Portage, MI. Pete had suffered a bout with Pneumonia and while recuperating suffered a ruptured aneurysm located behind his kidney resulting in his death.
