      “ASHLAND COUNTY, SS.
      Be it Remembered, That on this 18 day of Feby A.D. 1859. personally appeared before me, J.D. Jones, Judge of the Court of Probate, in and for said county, Lewis Harden, who being duly sworn, deposes and says that _______ is more than twenty-one years old and has no wife living; that Mary E. Hatfield is more than eighteen years old, has no husband living, that she is a resident of said county; and that the said Joshua Harden and said Mary E. Hatfiled are not nearer of kin than first cousins, and further says no.

      Civil War Pension papers indicate Joshua enlisted 20 February 1865 in Wooster, Ohio, and was mustered out 3 October 1865 at Camp Dennison Ohio.

      On 2 May 1882, Joshua made his Declaration for Original Invalid Pension in Elkhart County, Indiana. He was 49 years old and a resident of Goshen. He, “enrolled on the 20th day of February, 1865, in Company B of the 186 regiment of Infantry commanded by Cap’t. James Drake, and was honorably discharged at Camp Dennison Ohio on the 3rd day of October, 1865; that his personal description is as follows: Age, 49 years; height, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches; complexion, sandy, hair, sandy; eyes, blue. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Nashville, in the State of Tennessee on or about the 15th day of August, 1865, he contracted the disease of Camp Diarrhoea caused by bad water and marching from Chattanooga, over heating from walking etc, which discease continued several days very badly. Have never been well from it. It occurs every two or three weeks. Can’t get anything to help it at all. He was treated at Cumberland Hospital No. 9 for about 6 weeeks - cannot state exact date. Was in the hospital at Louisville several days.
      Since leaving the service this applicant has resided at Loudenville, the county of Ashland in the State of Ohio and at Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana.” When he could work he was a common laborer. Before the service he was a farm laborer. Joshua cannot read or write.

      On 2 May 1898 Joshua completed a form detailing his current marital and family status. He and Mary Elizabeth Hatfield were married in Loudenville, Ashland County, Ohio by Squire Sanburn. Mary Elizabeth Harden died April 16, 1882. Current children living were Ellen E. Harden, born June 7th 1861; Felenia Izora Harden was born August 18th 1864; Alice M. Harden was born March 28, 1868; and, Mary E. Harden was born September 21, 1873.

      Adjutant General’s Report 28 April 1883 states, “Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions. Joshua Harden, a Private of Company “B, 186 Regiment Ohio volunteers, was enrolled on the 20th day of Feb., 1865, at Wooster, O. 1 Year, and is reported: present to June 30, 1865. (Latest muster and payroll of company on file.) No report of him on Return for August 1865. Muster Out Roll of Co. dated Sept. 18, 1865 by order of Major Matchet. Mustered out at Camp Dennison U. S. Gen. Hospl. Camp Dennison, O., October 3, 1865. Not borne as Hardin. Co. was at Nashville, Tenn. in Aug. 65.
      Why taken to hospital. Not stated. No evidence of alleged disability - Aug. 15, 65. Regtl. Hospl. records not on file. M. Bach, Assistant Adjutant General”

      Several individuals provide affidavits regarding Joshua’s medical inability to work. They are; Thomas Self, Noble Lecount, John H. Bruce, William Hatfield and Isabell Mc Utchan. Uriah F. Swain served with Joshua in the Civil War and supports the claim that the diarrhea began during the war.

      In 1900 Joshua was living at Pipe Creek, Indiana, with the family of his daughter Mary Steel.

      On 2 October 1909, Joshua presents a family bible to Geo. R. Harper, a Notary Public, to verify its contents in proving his birth and identity. Harper writes:
      “ This is to Certify that Joshua Harden of 405 N. 7th St., Goshen, Indiana, late of Co. B. 186 Ohio Vol. Inf. has exhibited to me his family Bible which is a sheep skin bound Bible, very much worn, discolored and broken with all leaves pieces to Chap. VIII Exodus missing. In this Bible I find a sheet of old fashioned letter paper worn and discolored apparently very old with faded ink detached from Bible, however, upon which is written (the) following family record.

      I further certify that claimant, Joshua Harden, has the following, ‘J.H. Harden, 1834,’ tatooed on his left forearm.”

      In a “Declaration for Pension” affidavit on 2 October 1909, Joshua states that he was born Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 30 June 1834. He also mentions Lancaster County, Pennsylvania as his birthplace in pension records dated 1904.

      1910 Elkhart County, Goshen Death Record states that Joshua Harden died 17 January 1910. He was retired, a widower and resided at 405 No. 7th, Goshen. He was 75 years old. He died of organic heart disease, gastritis and general dropsy. The physician was A. S. Hollinsworthof Goshen and the undertaker was E. Culp.
