    Notes
    • From Van Haitsma Family tree:
" According to Dean Kruithof, Sidney [Van Haitsma] and his family moved to Clam Union TWp, Missaukee Co Michigan in the late 1880's or early 1890''s aling with his in-laws and Maria's sister's family.

Sidney (Sietse re Michigan Marriage records; Seitze
according to Grand daughter Diane Houlihan) Van Haitsma born
1855 (1845 re Michigan 1884 census, with 32 years in
Michigan; 3-24-1845 according to Diane, and 3-18-1843
according to Dean Kruithof). His birth place was the Netherlands.
On Jan 26, 1891 he ("Haatsma" in Vriesland CRC records) made
profession of faith in the Vriesland CRC.
According to Dean Kruithof, Sidney and his family moved to Clam
Union Twp, Missaukee Co Michigan in the late 1880's or early
1890's along with his in-laws and Maria's sister's family. Dean
writes: In the 1890's, it was not a good time around Vriesland,
Michigan. The country was in a depression and TB (consumption)
kiulled many people. Meanwhile in the Missaukee County area
there were vast forest fires causing land to be very cheep. The
Dutch started to sette that area and Sidney was among them.
The 1900 US census indicates that he has died. Betty Addink reports
that he died in 1899. The probate file reports he died on 11-21-
1899. His Grand daughter, Diane Houlihan reports that Sietze
died on 11-12-1899 in Prosper, Michigan.
There is a difference of opinion on the relationship between Sidney
and Johannes Van Haitsma. Some have suggested that Sidney is a son
of Johannes, but the only Sietse (Sidney) offspring of Johannes is a
daughter. Nor can he be a sibling of Johannes, because again the
sibling of Johannes called Sietse is a sister. What seems most
likely is that Sidney is another relative, a generation younger than
Johannes, who like Wopke and Abbie migrated to Michigan, perhaps
because of his close relationship to Tjette's family. He might have
been a Grandson of Tjette's brother. Another question about him is
whether it is this Sietse who was a charter member of Zutphen CRe.
Sietse Van Haitsma, more commonly known as Sidney Van Haitsma.
There are uncertainties about who is the first child of Tjalling, and
also about who is Sidney Van Haitsma. A number of family members
have suggested that he is one of Johannes' sons. However, Johannes'
will clearly does not indicate a son by that name. Dr. Glenn Van
Haitsma wrote that Jtette and Antje had a daughter Sietse born in
1825 and who married Frank Hornstra and died in childbirth in
1851. "Then, I assumed, Johannes and Sjoukje (Susie) had adaughter born to them in 1852, whom they named Sietse after the
recently deceased sister. It was very customary to name newborns
after a recently decec, sed close relative. That Sietse (who
Americanized her name to Sarah, I think) later married an Agema."
"I can't vouch for the accuracy of my understanding of this account,
but that's the way I've put those pieces together in my own mind."
Another version of Sietse's beginnings come from Prosper Cemetery
records in the Falmouth area. Carol Van Haitsma, (daughter-in-law
to D.R. Van Haitsma reports that Sietse is a son of Tjalke Van
Haitsma, born January 24, 1845 in Ottawa County MI and that he
died 11-21-1899. One problem with this information is that all
other indicators show Tjalke or Tjalling migrating in the early
1850's, a few years after the rest of the family.
      On 5-7-1879 Sietse married
Mary (Maria Pieters) Kruithof, born 9-17-1860 according to the
Vriesland CRC records; but in the month of July according to the
1884 census; birth place is the Netherlands; She migrated in
1874 and spent 20 years in Michigan re 1884 census. They were
married in Vriesland by Rev Gerrit Hemkes, according to the Ottawa
      Co marriage records, (book 5, p 182 # 107) Sietse was 24, Maria
was 18 & both were born in the Netherlands. The 1900 census
showed her owning the family farm in Clam Union Twp of Missaukee
      C. She reportedly died 8-2-1951 in Falmouth and is buried in
      Prosper, MI.
Her father was Pieter Kruithof (Kruijthoff), born 7-7-1833, in
Stad aan het Haringvliet, the Netherlands. Her Grand parents were
Gerrit Kruijthoff & Maria Meijaart (Meyaard) & her mother was
Cornelia Vander Veer, born 8-28-1835 in the Netherlands. They
were married on 4-19-1856 in Stad aan het Haringvliet, NO, and
migrated on 11-10-1 863 to Drenthe Michigan where they stayed
until moving again to Clam Union Twp, Missaukee Co, Michigan.
Pieter died 3-5-1908 and is buried in Prosper, MI. Cornelia
diedl-9-1916 and is also buried in Prosper, MI.
Her sister was Sena (Lena) Kruithof, born 8-12-1863 in the
      Netherlands according to Ottawa Co Marriage Book 5, p. 217, # 80.
She was also a widow by 1900. She married Geert Haveman
