Death of One of Croton’s Old Settlers
Christopher Kaufman was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 13, 1823, and died February 19, 1904, aged 80 years 7 months and six days. Mr. Kaufman was 14 years old when his father died and fulfilling the requirements of the law in relation to his education he was, according to the custom of his country, to learn a trade, and that of stone mason seemed the most feasible. After fulfilling his contract with his master he worked as opporunity offered and supported his mother. When the conscription for the German army was made, his number entitled him to a release and he availed himslelf of his liberty by emigrating to the United States, his mother accompanying him to Pike county, Ohio, where a brother of the deceased resided. From there he procceded to New Orleans, reaching there in December, 1845. In June, 1846, he came to Chicago, and from there to Muskegon Forks in Newaygo counthy. After his experience in the lath mill terminated, he settled on 80 acres of land in Croton, designated as “----land” and paid for the same, but by some chicanery never very clearly learned by anybody, a collector appeared, who took a second payment, but failed to account for it to the authorities, and Mr. Kaufman paid for his property a third tiem, but he kept up his courage and hard work and now owns 240 acres, most all under cultivation and first-class improvemnts. Mr. Kaufman was marrried to Christina Marsh in 1851, at Muskegon; she died in 1867, leaving one adopted daughter, Mrs. Russell Rice of Grand Rapids. The second wife of Mr. Kaufman was a widow, Elizabeth M. Jones, with one daughter, Mrs. Eliza Cole, who resides in Pierson township. The second marriage of Mr. Kaufman took place September 13 1867, and she died December 11, 1886. Three children were born to them: Christena Race of Coral, and William and Bertha Kaufman, who still reside on the old farm. He leaves a host of friends to mourn his loss.
