FALMOUTH — Ida Mae DeRuiter, of Falmouth, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Autumnwood of McBain. She was 88.

She was born on May 14, 1924, in Aetna Township, Missaukee County, to John G. and Winnie (Jager) Herweyer, and they preceded her in death. On October 17, 1946, at Prosper Christian Reformed Church, she married Gerald DeRuiter, and he preceded her in death on November 9, 1998.

Mrs. DeRuiter graduated from Lake City High School. She was a member of Prosper Christian Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school, was a member of Ladies Aid and did readings at church functions and always made people laugh. She enjoyed baking and will be remembered as “Grandma Cookie.” She also enjoyed painting, flower gardening, playing cards with her friends, playing the piano and singing with her family. In her younger years, she and her husband, Gerald, were avid golfers.

Survivors include her children: Jerry (Bev) DeRuiter, Ken (Ellie) DeRuiter, all of Falmouth, Bev (Pete) Clover of Grand Rapids, Dawn (Mark) Ebels, Diane (Dave) DeZeeuw all of Falmouth, Bonnie (Dale) Brinks of McBain, and Dave (Cindy) DeRuiter of Falmouth; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; in-laws: Ruth (Ray) Modders, Alice Herweyer, Tress DeRuiter, Esther DeRuiter, Jeanette DeRuiter, Arlene Mains, Norma (Don) VanderWerf and Jane Keim.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger DeRuiter, an infant daughter, Betty Lou DeRuiter, and brothers: Bob, Jay, Gerald and Don Herweyer.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Autumnwood and Belle Oakes for their great care for their mom over the last three and half years, and a special thank you to Barb Corpe for her care and friendship for their mom, too.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Prosper Christian Reformed Church in Falmouth, with the Rev. Larry Baar officiating. Burial will be at Prosper Cemetery in Falmouth. Friends may meet the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the McBain Chapel of Peterson Funeral Homes, Inc.
