Notes |
- 6/17/06: Cathy Weaver told me that Roger Garner was raised by relatives in Portsmouth, Ohio. His brother, name unknown, remained with his father (in Springfield?). His brother later married, left his wife, and joined a monastery.
Cathy went on to relate a story that Roger Garner's daughter, Winnie, told Cathy. Years later, Roger Garner's brother approached Roger Garner in Wren's (?) when he was on his annual underwear buying spree, and asked: "Would you recognize your brother if you saw him?" The story goes on that Roger convinced his brother to go back to his wife and kids and provided him funds to do so. The borther did, but later left his wife again.
Cathy also said that the Portsmouth relatives later relocated to Lexington, KY. Louella, Wilma Stokes(?), were the names that Cathy mentioned.
8/5/06: 1930 Census shows Rodger (sic) W. Garner as HOH, aged 37, w/ his spouse Anna, aged 35 and daughter Winifred, aged 2 6/12, and father-in-law John Coakley, Winnia (sic) A Coakley aged 39 and cousin Ruth E. Tayloe, aged 16.
8/5/06: 1920 Census shows Rodger (sic) as a roomer in Springfield OH, w/ occupation of (steam railroad) fireman. Another fireman, Lawrence Dennehy, is living there as the HOH Henry Sassen's brother-in-law. Query whether RGC schoolmate, Roger Sassen, traces his roots back here?
8/5/06: 1900 Census shows Rodger (sic), aged 8, living with his father, Thomas, aged 43, and his brother, Henry, aged 6, in Jefferson (Greene Co.) Ohio.

With Roger Garner's personal effects were several seniority lists for Olentangy 175, local union of the Locomotive Engineers. An old one (c. 1890) showed Thomas O'Connor as #___ of ___. Thomas O'Connor was a guest at Roger Garner's wedding. Putting 2+2 together, the author believes that Thomas O'Connor may have been instrumental in Roger Garner's landing a railway job in 1916.

Article is undated. Census records show that Anna lived with her father in 1920 and with her spouse in 1930. On the flip side of the article, reference is made to President Harding's inaugeration (1921) and a whiskey tax in Washington. Consider requesting info from St. Raphael's re exact date. 10/29/06: emailed Cathy Weaver w/ request.
