Timothy was haying in the field, which is now a part of the V.F.W. picnic grounds when he received his orders to report for duty in the Civil War. He took his pitchfork and placed it in the maple tree beside the road and remarked to his family,“Leave that there until I get back. “
During the battle of the Falling Timbers, he was with his brother Simeon. When they were completely surrounded,Simeon said to Timothy, “You stay with me and we’ll get out of this.” So Simeon, after firing one shot from his musket, changed endswith it and proceeded to maul his way through the Confederate lines and escaped. But Timothy, being a small man, decided it would be better to surrender. He did and was in the Andersonville rebel prison for a long time. He lived to be liberated, but he didn’t have the strength to crawl away from the gate and there he died. Prongs of his pitchfork are still visible in a large tree by the side of the road in the V.F.W. picnic grounds. This tree has been dedicated as a memorial to TimothySargeant.(Taken from the book “History of the Mt. Pleasant Cementary by Carl T. Blakeslee.
