    Notes
    • Samuel must have had an older brother Williams Barker. Samuel’s great uncle John Williams of Scituate made his will in 1691 when Samuel was five years old, making Williams Barker John Williams’ major heir with the proviso that if Williams Barker died without issue, the legacy would pass to Samuel:
“To Willams Barker, the son of my nephew John Barker of Marshfield, all my farm in Scituate where I now live, to be possessed by him when 21 years of age, until then it shall be in the occupation of his said father, he to pay legacies as directed; if said Williams die without issue, said farm shall go to his brother Samuel Barker, “He then Giving himself and being thenceforth Called by the name of Williams Barker”; to nephew John Barker £30, and to his son John Barker £10, and to Samuel Barker aforesaid £30, and to each of the daughters of said nephew John Barker, £10; to said nephew John Barker one moiety or half share in undivided lands at Conahasset.”

      From the Barker Genealogy:
Samuel Williams at the age of eight inherited the Barker homestead at Scituate, Mass. This house was built by John Williams, father in law of Robert and John Barker, as early as 1634 and was for a time used as a garrison-house, as appears from its massive inner walls of brick pierced with loopholes. The place remained in the Barker family for six or seven generations, the house being in a good state of preservation, though the interior has been modernized. It stands upon high ground with an extensive view of the harbor and sea, about 1920 it became the Hatherly Inn. [3]
