    • IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR
Mary Christina Janssens immigrated to the US from the Netherlands with her father, Martin Hubertus Janssens/Johnson, his second wife Johanna Flips Janssens, her full brother Martin, and her two half-siblings, Rosalie and Johannes (the children of Martinus and Johanna) in 1873.They settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Marinus died a few months later and Johanna worked as a washerwoman until her remarriage to Herman Hemmers seven years later.
Mary Christina was known to her family and friends as "Mary." Her mother's name was Maria Theresia Scheppers.
In 1886 Mary married William Edmund Tooher, known as "Ed." They lived at 15 Beech Ave. in Grand Rapids. Ed was an alcoholic and their marriage suffered. Mary took her baby daughter Mary Isabel (Mabel) with her to Detroit to get away from Ed and while there, Ed took his life with a combination of alcohol and a poison called "Rough On Rats." (1889)
Mary is listed in the 1890 GR City Directory as widow of William E., living at 52 Third Ave., occupation housekeeper. I think this meant she was keeping house for herself and daughter Mabel, not that she worked as a housekeeper for others.
Mary remarried to Albert Peters around 1892, and they had two girls and two boys: Johanna, Bernie, Henry and Bertha. Mary contracted pneumonia, though, and died in 1900.
Albert Peters remarried and his new wife (Hannah Camp) decided that Mabel Tooher, Mary and Ed's daughter, now 12 years old, couldn't live with them. So Mabel moved in with her mom's half-sister, Rosie Johnson LaBelle.
There is no notice of Mary Christina Johnson Tooher Peters' death in the Grand Rapids "Telegram Herald" from March 7-11, 1900. Her funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Church in Grand Rapids. She was attended by Dr. Droske but died of typhoid pneumonia nonetheless. The undertaker was O’Brien Brothers. Mary is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery (Section I 229) in Grand Rapids with her half-sister Rosalie’s family, although she does not have a headstone. In the 1930s, according to her grandson Jack Bek, Mary and 2-3 others buried in that plot had iron pipe crosses at their gravesites.
Mary’s death certificate is found at the Kent County Clerk’s office, although it cannot be found on SeekingMichigan.com.
