    • From the records of Corla Crawford and Patrick Dennis Hurley (Ancestry World Tree Postings):
      Peter enlisted for the civil war on 7 Aug, 1861, Co. B 16th Regiment Michigan Vol., for the terms of three years. He was mustered into service on 7 Sept, 1861 at Camp Backus, Detroit, MI.
      He was in encampment at Halls Hill, Virgina during the winter of 18691-62, active at the siege of Yorktown, Virgina from 4 April 1862-4 May, Battle of Hanover Court House, Virginia 27 May 1862, Battle of Mechanicsville, Virgina 26 June 1862, and the Battle of Gains Mill, Virgina 27 June 1862.
      In the battle of Gains Mill, Peter was shot in the upper left thigh, shattering the bone. He laid on the battle field for over twent-four hour period, and rexeived three more musket balls to teh upper body, one piercing his shoulder.
      Peter was then captured with several hundred men of the 16th, including the Colonel T.W. B. Stockton, by the conferate forces around the 29 of June 1862 at City Point, Virgina, then sent to a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for six months to recover from his wounds, but leaving his left leg and knee joint stiff and walked with a severe limp and little to no use of his one arm. He was discharged from the service Dec. 26, 1862 at a Camp near Jeffersonville, Indiana and returned home to his wife and children.
      Medical Information: Was shot 4 times in the battle of Gaines Mill (Seven Days Campain) Once in the upper left thigh and three times in the upper body, one piercing his shoulder.
