    Notes
    • Tom was baptized 8 Mar 1782 at St. Geoge Church in Kirk Onchan, Douglas, Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is a country located in the Irish Sea, today a self-governing British Crowned Dependency. It is 10 miles across and 30 miles long. There is a great variety of terrain — deep lush ravines with almost tropical vegetation, rugged, rocky coastline, mountains with heather and gorse, pastoral valleys with sheep and cows grazing. At the north end of the island are several miles of sand dunes extending to the sea.
Jack [John I. or F.] Moore (b. 1924) was an amateur genealogist and traveled to the Isle of Man in the late 1960s/early 1970s to research the Moores. Jack discovered that Captain William Bligh of “The Mutiny on the Bounty” fame was married on February 4, 1781 in the same church the Moores attended, St. Peter’s Protestant Church. Captain Bligh lived in Douglas for about four years before embarking on the “Bounty” voyage in 1788.
Thomas married Jane Curphey at St. Peter’s in Kirk Onchan on 9 Jul 1809 by Mr. John Canonell, Vicar. Henry Corlett and Judith Oates were their sponsors. Tom and Jane had six children, all baptized at Kirk Braddan between 1810-1820.
In March 1816 the family was living in a house at the south end of Atholl Street, adjoining the Peel Road.
Tom was a sailmaker in Douglas. In the "Manx Advertiser," the local newspaper, Thomas advertised in Feb of 1812 that he was selling shares in four boats. From 1813-16 he was also selling/letting a "newly built house" in town. In late April 1822 one of Thomas' children was burnt to death. His 13 year old daughter Catherine died in 1834.
Tom died in the Post Office Lane on March 17, 1839 and was buried in the Kirk Braddan Cemetery three days later. His gravestone inscription reads (at site 555 on cemetery map): “Sacred to the Memory of Thomas Moore, Sailmaker of Douglas, who departed this life on the 17th day of March 1839, aged 59 years, ...... and Jane, the wife of Thomas Moore, departed this life January 3rd, 1871, aged 79 years.
