    • IMMIGRANT ANCESTOR
Sarah and Patrick had ten children. They left the poverty of Ireland and immigrated to America, presumably for Patrick fo find work in a mine or mill. He died either when they first arrived in the port of Boston or shortly thereafter somewhere between Boston and Wilkes-Barre, PA where Sarah and their children settled. Family lore says that she worked to alleviate the working conditions of the coal miners. The pastor at her church, Holy Savior, Fr. John Curran, was very involved with settling a miner’s strike in 1902, so it makes sense that the parishioners were immersed in the struggle, too, thus the legend about Sarah.

      1910 Wilkes-Barre City Directory:
Sarah is living at 442 Scott with Anna, Martin C, and Patrick J.

Son Michael moved to Philadelphia and Tom to Youngstown, Ohio. By 1919 daughter Anna married John Dougherty, a widower and they, though not legally, adopted a girl named Mary. A son Albert is mentioned in one of Sarah’s obituaries, but no family member ever mentioned him.
The children and Sarah’s birthdates are not consistent on records.
Sara died on July 11, 1926 of chronic endocarditis and chronic nephritis. Her funeral was at Holy Spirit Church, Hilliard St., Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She is buried at Hanover Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre (St. Mary's). Her obituaries in The Wilkes-Barre Record are as follows:
“Monday, July 12, 1926 — Mrs. Sarah Rattigan, a highly esteemed resident of East End, died yesterday morning at 4:30 o’clock at the family home, 444 Scott Street, following several months illness of general debiity. She was a member of Holy Savior Church.
“Surviving are the following children: Mrs. John Dougherty, Thomas of Youngstown, Ohio, Michael of Philadelphia, Albert, Martin, and Patrick at home.”
“Tuesday, July 13, 1926 — Scores of friends of Mrs. Sarah Rattigan, one of the best known and esteemed residents of the East End section of the city were grieved to learn of her sudden death at the family home, 444 Scott St, East End on Sunday morning at 4:40. Mrs. Rattigan was a woman of devout Christian character and her gentle disposition and kindly nature earned her a wide circle of friends throughout the city and the East End in particular. Mrs. Rattigan, who was aged 75, was a member of Holy Savior Church, East End, and despite her advanced age took an active interest in church affairs and organizations. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. John Dougherty; Thomas, of Youngstown, Ohio; Michael of Philadelphia; Martin and Patrick.”

      * I tried many census and directory searches to see what happend to Sadie and Albert and to try to get the children in correct birth order, to no avail. I believe Kate, James, and the unknown child were born first and all died young, then Michael, Sadie, Albert, Tom, Anna, Martin, Patrick.
