    Notes

    • Lucy was born 14 Sep 1858 in Grand Rapids, although the official records did not start until 1867. Her baptism took place at St. Andrew’s Church on 23 Nov 1858, when she was two months old. Her godparents were Jacobus Riordan and Ellen Dugan and the priest was Fr. Francis VanErp.
One of Lucy’s earliest memories was of sitting in the yard as a small child when her Aunt Lucy Walsh came running onto the property yelling to her sister (Lucy’s mom), “My God, Maria! Mr. Lincoln’s been shot!”
Lucy married Joe Tennis in June 1891 when she was almost 33. The ceremony was at St. James’ Church with Fr. Pulcher presiding. John Lynch (Joe’s brother) and Jennie O’Brien (Lucy’s sister) were the witnesses.
Lucy was short, barely five foot tall, and had light brown hair. Even before teeth brushing was considered proper hygiene, she insisted the children wipe their teeth with baking soda and a rag before leaving the house.
Lucy’s first child, Maria (pronounced Mah-rye-uh) was born on the day Lucy’s mother Maria was buried.
Bernadine Reynolds and Georgia (Sr. Maurita) Reynolds, Lucy’s granddaughter, both told me that Lucy and Joe had a son who died in infancy. His name was Raymond Fabian Tennis. However, there is no record of his birth or death at the Kent Co. Clerk's office, 1867-1929. He would have been born in the 1890s.
Of their five living children, it was said that Maria and Walt looked like their father Joe, Joe and Helen looked like their mother, and Agnes looked like neither.
Three weeks after her husband Joe died of a heatstroke, Lucy suffered a stroke while reading her prayer book in the living room. Helen, her youngest dauhter, found her immediately, and by a coincidence, all of her other children arrived home within minutes. She was doing quite well, but had another stroke the next day, resulting in temporary paralysis. For the next three years Lucy was confined to her bed, but still ran the household from there. Her oldest daughter Maria quit work to take care of the home.
Lucy died on Jan 6, 1919 (although her death, like her birth, isn’t found at the Kent County Clerk’s office or at SeekingMichigan.com) and was buried next to her husband at Resurrection Cemetery. They were both later moved to Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids. The “Official Death List” in The Grand Rapids Press on January 9, 1919 read, “Lucy Tennis, 58, 846 Third St. NW.”
