Tom was born on May 13, 1877 in County Mayo, Ireland to Patrick Rattigan and Sarah Mullens. The family story is that the Rhattigans lived at #10 Lennington Lane in some small village in Mayo, but after writing to all the post offices in the county, none had ever heard of a “Lennington Lane.” Another family story is that the Rhattigans were “lace curtain” Irish (well-off), however, living on a “lane” was poor indeed.
Tom had two brothers and one sister and the family came to America around 1883, although it says 1888 on 1910 Census. They landed in Boston and continued on to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Tom’s father Patrick died shortly after their arrival, but it is not known of he died in Boston, Wilkes-Barre, or somewhere in between. Maybe someday his death certificate will be found.

Tom met Nora Leonard at a dance. They courted and married on Nov 24, 1903. Tom and Nora moved from Erie to Youngstown, Ohio because of the opening of the steel mills. Their first child, James, was born in 1905. Nora and Tom then offered to raise Sara Daley when the child’s mother died. The couple had nine more children of their own from 1907-1924, including one who died soon after birth. The kids were all baptised at their church, St. Columbus Cathedral.
Tom worked as a carpenter at a steel mill to support his large family. They lived in a two-story home at 252 E. Avondale. Tom had old-fashioned, excellent manners. As a hobby, he made calling cards with his beautiful handwriting.

Tom added the "h" to Rattigan because he felt it was more in keeping with the Irish pronunciation of the name: "r-HAT-igan." It has to roll off your tongue.
On the night before Thanksgiving 1929, Tom went to the drug store, made his purchase, stepped off the curb and was hit by a car. The Youngstown Vindicator reported:
“The Thanksgiving hunting trip planned by Thomas Rhattigan, aged 53, of 252 E. Avondale Ave., will never take place. Rhattigan, the father of nine children. was killed almost instantly Monday night by an auto while on the way home from the drug store with linament for his sick wife.
“Mr. Rhattigan was knocked down by an auto driven by Mrs. Lawrence Crawford, aged 21, 821 Prmelee ve. as he stepped from the curb after leaving a drug store at South and Lucius Aves., police say. He died in Youngstown Hospital of a fractured skull.
“The nine children were at their home this morning sobbing and dazed.
“ ‘Dad and I were fixing the car yesterday to take a hunting trip on Thanksgiving,’ Aloysius, the 19-year-old son whispered. ‘He just got his license.’
“Mr. Rhattigan was identified at the hospital through his hunting license. He was taken to the hospital by Roy Shaffer, 551 Lucius Ave.
“ ‘Mother had pains in her shojlders, and dad went to get linament for her,’ recalled Veronica, the 22-year-old daughter. ‘We waited so long for him to come back. A dreary Thanksgiving for us.’
“But, sis, we were goin’ to have a goose for dinner,’ interrupted a dreamy-eyed seven-year-old girl with long black curls (Mary). She didn’t realize.
      “Hush, honey, please —
“There are four of the Rhattigan boys, one a carpenter like his father, but all are out of work now.
“Traffic Commissioner Carl Olson this morning exonerated Mrs. Crawford for any blame in the accient and ordered a traffic light installed at Lucius and South Aves.”
Tom's grandson, Bob Montagne thought the drug store's door was but a step away from the street. Bob also said that Tom bought 9 or 10 house lots on a horseshoe shaped street in Youngstown and planned to build a house for each of his children to live there. The houses were never built after his death and the kids sold the lots in 1957. Land prices went up significantly after that and they wished they had held onto the lots longer.
