Barton City is located on Jewell Lake in Millen Township in in central Alcona County. The town began as a lumbering town named Mud Lake in the 1880’s and was renamed Barton City after Frank Barton, an early settler, when the town was surveyed in 1912. Barton City is an unincorporated community governed by Hawes and Millen Townships in Alcona County. Hawes Township: 1935 Quick Rd., Lincoln, MI 48742, (No Phone). The site of the main branch of the Potts Lumbering company and the Loud Lumbering Company. It was first called Mud Lake, from its location on Mud Lake and was given a post office of that name on March 10, 1887. In 1912, two surveyors staying at the home of Frank Barton, a settler here laid out the town around the lake (on paper), sold lots, and named it for him.
