    Text Grand Rapids: Louis F. BARNES, 80, died June 17, 1996, at Butterworth Hospital.

    He was born July 30, 1915, in Gibson City, Ill., a son of William and Nora (FITZHENRY) BARNES. He was a 1935 graduate of Centreville High School and owned a 5 & 10 Store in Centreville. He also served as branch manager of the Michigan State License Bureau, Centreville Village Clerk, and Justice of the Peace.

    On Aug. 11, 1940, he married Leola "Lee" SHEARS.

    He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army with the Armored Infantry.

    In 1949 he moved to Rockford and became an active member of the Bostwick Lake Congregational Church, serving as moderator and on the trustees and deacon board. He retired from Lear Siegler (Smith Industries) in 1978 after 26.5 years of employment. Then he was appointed building inspectors for Grattan Township for four years.

    He was a Master Mason at Mt. Herman Lodge #24 in Centreville and was involved in many organizations in the Rockford/Grand Rapids area.

    Surviving are his wife and children, Johnlynne and David FRAYS of Centreville and Gary L. and Valerie BARNES of Royal Oak; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine WASHBURN and Ethel KIRBY of Sturgis and Alice SNOW, Kalamazoo; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Ruth BARNES, Buchanan; and nieces and nephews.

    Friends and relatives may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe St., Rockford. Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bostwick Lake Congregational Church with Rev. Dr. Gary L. Davis officiating. A Masonic Memorial service is at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

    Memorials may be directed to the Bostwick Lake Congregational Church or Saladin Shrine Crippled Children Foundation.
