Notes |
- Betty, or Betsey, died age 69.
In The Descendants of Cornet Robert Stetson it is said that George Stetson married Betsey Collamore, daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Collamore, citing the Collamore Genealogy. The printed Scituate vital records say George Stetson Jr married Betty Torrey on 23 Oct 1777.
The Genealogy of the Descendants of Anthony Collamer states that Betty, daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Collamore married George Stetson on that date with two references proving the conection, namely, Benjamin had deeded one quarter of his fram to his daughter, widow Betty Stetson, before his death in 1803, and the inventory of the estate of George Stetson, mariner, of Scituate, made in 1800, states that his house was built on land of Benjamin Collamore.
The original written Scituate town records have the marriage recorded in three places. One of those has “M^r George Stetson Ju^r to Betty Collamer [with Collamer crossed out and “Torrey” written above] both of Scituate. Augutst y^e 23: 1777”. The other two name her only as Betty Torrey.
Given these records, the most likely explanation is that Betty’s first husband was a Mr. Torrey. [1, 2, 3]
